Indie venue week 2016

This week is a week long celebration of independent venues around the UK, shining a light on important and independently run live music venues, hosting lots of new music.

Take a look at their website; this year Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar and The Hope & Ruin (both part of Drink in Brighton), and Komedia are being celebrated.

THE HOPE & RUIN
Hope-and-Ruin-

With a highly central position between the Clock Tower and Brighton station, The Hope & Ruin (FKA The Hope) is a bustling, music-led, watering hole popular with everyone from hipsters, musicians to the after-work crowd, with the location guaranteeing a regular supply of fresh faces. There are always quality tunes on the stereo, from 13th Floor Elevators to The Automatic; a pretty great menu of veggie friendly pizza and hotdogs, which means no-one need go hungry. Above the pub itself is the 150-capacity venue that has been an essential part of the Brighton music scene since its days as the legendary Lift. Since being refurbished in 2015, the Hope & Ruin has hit the local venue scene with an even bigger splash.
MV has put on a lot of great indie-band shows there such as Girlpool, DRINKS, PINS. With a intimate 150 capacity,

STICKY MIKE’S FROG BAR
Sticky-Mikes-Frog-Bar-2

Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar (Formerly Jam) is an events-led two-storey music & arts venue in central Brighton. Upstairs is a light and open space with quirky mismatching furniture. It has regularly changing artwork on the walls from local artists and serves up tasty handmade pizzas (yes Pizza Face). Downstairs is a different affair completely; a dark basement with low ceilings that regularly hosts the most credible underground bands, DJs and comedians. Acts to have performed at Sticky Mike’s in the last year include; Delorean, Carl Craig, Frankie and the Heartstrings,  2562, Melt Banana, Brother, Fatboy Slim, DJ Format, Vadim, Smoke Fairies, Gentlemans Dub Club, Ty Segall, Mount Kimbie, Jason Lytle and many more.

One of our faves:
KOMEDIA

Located in the North Laines (heart of Brighton!), Komedia has two lovely spaces (Main space, and studio) which we use very frequently. It has one of the most diverse arts and entertainment programmes in the UK, including live music, comedy, cabaret and children’s theatre. Some of our MV show highlights: Julia Holter, Marina Celeste, Nick Mulvey, Mercury Rev, Sylvana Esso, Eddie Argos.
Upcoming shows: Lubomyr Melnyk, Moogmemory, Trembling Bells.
