Trading under the soubriquets of Manitoba and Caribou, Canadian maths PhD Dan Snaith has a decade of supple, eclectic electronic music making to his names. His latest and fifth album, Swim, is a small marvel, reimagining dance music as pulsating field explorations. As a vocalist, he can play it as straight and tender as Hot Chip on tracks like “Leave House”, but Snaith’s real bravura lies in his unbounded sonic palette. With Alice Coltrane-like harp runs, meditation bowls, rave stabs and Doppler effect dub wobbles, he creates music full of surprises that is always melodic.
