JANE WEAVER / SYD ARTHUR (Co-headline)

Note: Previously bought tickets for Jane Weaver only are still valid on this show

Jane Weaver will be joined in a co-headline with Kent’s famous psych-rockers Syd Arthur a truly amazing line up.

Truly independent and resilient experimental Liverpudlian songwriter / sound-carrier, Jane Weaver brings to Folkestone her conceptual-pop classics. Jane’s musical versatility has seen her been called-upon from time-honoured musicians such as Gruff Rhys, Richard Hawley and Laetitia Sadier. Her wide-reaching, yet wildly original craft, has allowed her music to appear in fashion campaigns for Chanel and Chloe all the way to a wide-range of TV and cinematic productions and soundtracks. She returns with new album ‘Modern Kosmology’, an album of psychoactive pop energy after her 6 Music-approved and critically acclaimed album ‘The Silver Globe’ turned heads in 2015.

Kent 4-piece psych-rock band Syd Arthur are co-headlining the bill to what’s going to be a very special night. Syd Arthur have toured with the likes of White Demin, the Strokes, Paul Weller and Yes. Their classic ’60s and ’70s proto-prog and psychedelia is played through a modern lens, making them one of the most interesting new bands of the past few years.

Jane Weaver
Raised on the enthusiasm and inspiration of Factory Records founder Rob Gretton and counting Doves and Elbow as her early backing bands Jane’s desire to cultivate and promote Manchester’s lesser documented female musicians lead to her longrunning Bird records imprint (releasing the earliest recordings of Cate Le Bon, Beth Jeans Houghton and Maxine Peake) housed in the anti-office of Andy Votel’s Twisted Nerve label.

Meanwhile her presence as a live performer has been requested by the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Guy Garvey (Meltdown), Laetitia Sadier, Richard Hawley, Josephine Foster and Gruff Rhys. She has even flexed her knowledge in the DJ booth as a one-time member of Sean Rowley’s Guilty Pleasures DJ team. Jane’s music has appeared in fashion campaigns for Chanel and Chloe plus a wide-range of TV and cinematic productions such as the soundtrack to ‘Kiss Of The Damned’, directed by John Cassevetes daughter Xan. Jane’s voice was also sampled by the band Coldplay, on the track ‘Another’s Arms’.

Some of Jane’s lesser known creative endeavours have seen her contribute sound installation projects to labels via Manchester’s Boomkat experimental imprint; various international theatrical institutes as a film recomposer; as a compiler for Finders Keepers records, and even as an author of children’s books based on her visual collaborations with Klunkclick.

After 2015’s highly successful and critically acclaimed album ‘Silver Globe’ (topping end of year album lists all over the place and being heavily rotated and playlisted on BBC 6 music), Jane returns with her self taught, self penned, self played, self produced, and all-autonomous new album – Modern Kosmology. Heavily influenced by a cast of lesser-known spiritual muse (such as automatic abstract painter Hilma Af Klint and her fabled pre-surrealist secret society) Jane also enlists the physical skills of CAN’s Malcolm Mooney amongst a skeleton crew of Mancunian drum-lords and well versed psychedelic axe-men to punctuate Jane’s synth-loaded sonic architecture. Jane Weaver’s unwaning yearning for psychoactive pop energy has just reached a new level of magnetism. As snowclones go, Modern Kosmology is the new Silver. Another Spectrum to add to the tension.

“Weaver’s voice is the key to the album: she can’t help but add melody, even when what lies beneath is the drone.” – The Guardian 8/10

“The Silver Globe is arguably her most sonically adventurous work to date.” – The Quietus 8/10

“Jane Weaver’s ‘The Silver Globe’, an analogue synth-laden pop-krautrock-folk epic. It’s an album that transcends its influences and will seduce you with its charms.” – Piccadilly records

Syd Arthur
Since their formation in 2006, British psych-rock quartet Syd Arthur have immersed themselves in the rich musical history of their native Canterbury, drawing influences from late-’60s and early-’70s progressive pioneers like the Soft Machine and Caravan, and filtering them through a more contemporary lens.

Brothers Liam and Joel MaGill (guitar and bass, respectively) met drummer Fred Rother and violinist Raven Bush (nephew of Kate Bush) while in school and the group was formed, spending the following fundamental years gigging, developing their ornate jazz-rock sound, and eventually building their own recording studio, Wicker Studios, in 2009.
Apricity was released on Harvest records this year to critical praise as they continue to explore the myriad possibilities of improvisation, taking an exceptional approach born of prodigious musicianship, elemental songcraft, and an unabashed spirit of adventure.

“It’s a super summery, nostalgia-tinged… sounds like it’s being played through an Instagram filter – very chilled and with this underlying theme of lost innocence.” – The Independent
