Feminist punk icon Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, Le Tigre) returns with her most recent project The Julie Ruin – a classic of subversive pop.

We are really excited to have The Julie Ruin playing a Melting Vinyl Show on 24th May at Coalition.

During Bikini Kill’s hiatus, feminist punk icon, Kathleen Hanna, started a solo project – a collection of messy, lo-fi and sample-heavy solo recordings under the pseudonym Julie Ruin. The album is considered a ‘classic of subversive pop’.

Hanna wanted to perform the songs live, so, Hanna and Johanna Fateman got together to play the Julie Ruin record. What instead happened was the creation of the influential Le Tigre. Le Tigre took off, with the creation of 3 albums and extensive touring.

Le Tigre went on hiatus in 2010, and Hanna decided to try with Julie Ruin again. Hanna brought together Carmine Covelli, Sara Landeau, Kathi Wilcox, and Kenny Mellman to form The Julie Ruin. The challenge was to recraft and rehearse the solo recordings from the Julie Ruin record into a live full band set.

“This is the sound of musicians confident in their legacy and what they can do with it.” – Pitchfork

“Brighton sextet Slum Of Legs are an enticing bunch, fusing influences ranging from riot grrl, classical and krautrock into their repertoire.” Drowned In Sound

“Slum of Legs…could stir up a whole new youth revolution. Rhythmic, ominous and yes, hypnotic…the lyrics are whip smart and need spray painting on walls.” A Fog of Ideas
