Avant pop, New York-based Mercury Rev return with their critically revered psych-tinged and beautifully spacey indie music, and new album The Light In You via Bella Union.

Formed in the late 80s in Buffalo, New York, Mercury Rev initially evolved simply as a means of creating soundtracks for the members’ experimental student films as well as for Howard Nelson’s Lite-Brite and Marco Fogg’s Sugardaddy Sea.

Encouraged to further their music by academic mentor Tony Conrad — a minimalist composer and multimedia artist – Mercury Rev began to emerge and eventually the group recorded a demo onto a reel of 35mm magnetic film.

From then on, eclectic recording techniques (the group had collected samples from sites as far-ranging as Times Square and NASA’s Cape Canaveral to flesh out the music of their second album’s dense, prismatic sound), kept the band moving forward and creating vast and imaginative albums, with their magnum opus Deserter’s Songs receiving huge critical and commercial success in the UK and rest of Europe.

“Almost every note communicates emotional fragility and nostalgia for lost love, lost youth, lost dreams. Its songs are mournfully orchestral, shivering with woodwind and romantic but unstable strings” – The Guardian ****
