In their fourteen years together as a band, celebrated Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli have gone from being hometown heroes to being named U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors.  Their music is a notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga.Originally formed to play at an area labor protest over a decade ago, Ozomatli spent some of their early days participating in everything from earthquake prep "hip hop ghetto plays" at inner-city L.A. elementary schools to community activist events, protests, and city fundraisers. Proudly born as a multi-racial crew in post-uprising 90s Los Angeles, the band has built a formidable reputation over four full-length studio albums and a relentless touring schedule for taking party rocking so seriously that it becomes new school musical activism.

The year was 1994 and founding members Greg Saunier (drums) and Rob Fisk (bass) watched in dismay as their goth /grunge quartet Nitre Pit disbanded. Resolving not to give up, the panic-stricken duo reinvented itself as Deerhoof. Their recorded debut was the self-produced 7" Return of the Wood M'Lady on the Kill Rock Stars label. Their sound was huge but their vocals suffered a bit as a result of their over-expressive playing style. When Tokyo-born Satomi Matsuzaki decided to try out on a whim a year later, they knew instantly that they had found the missing puzzle piece.
In the early years Deerhoof was typically branded "too noisy for pop" and "too poppy for noise". Eventually this combination was to prove basic to the sound of contemporary indie rock, lifting the band out of obscurity in the process. Deerhoof never fit into any genre however, and no one would mistake their music for anyone. Even with their stylistic reinventions on every record, and the replacement of Fisk by guitarists John Dieterich and more recently Ed Rodriguez, Deerhoof remain an instantly recognizable genre unto themselves.

It is hard to think of a modern musician who can boast a broader range of skills and achievements than Nitin Sawhney. He is not only a classically-trained pianist and flamenco guitarist but also a cutting-edge club DJ and producer, which may explain why he is the only artist ever to have been invited to play both the BBC Electric Proms and the "real" Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. He has composed numerous orchestral symphonies and soundtracks for clients ranging from the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Ballet of China to Sony Playstation 3. He has been showered with arts awards and is the recipient of several honorary degrees.

In 1999 Sawhney re-wrote the rule book with the divine Beyond Skin which was short listed for a Mercury Prize and won the South Bank Show Award. London Undersound, his ninth record,is about how London has changed since 9/11 taking in his trade mark array of sub cultural influences, drum and base and hip hop, and bringing things up to date with sounds of dub step and collaborations with the likes of Natty and Paul McCartney.

A vehicle for the songs of Jason Molina (Songs Ohia), Magnolia Electric Co are from Indiana's slate-town, Bloomington, about as Midwest middle-of-nowhere as it gets. Summoning up the glory of Crazy Horse, alongside more melancholy country-rock style and strong influences of the English traditional folk scene, Molina's craft is a talent worth savouring. The new album, Josephine - to be released in July, pays tribute to the life and spirit of fallen bassist Evan Farrell (R.I.P. December 2007). Molina said each tune is a good faith attempt to make real Evan’s hopes for the record. It is this kind of raw emotion and strikingly honest songs that has time and time again astonished critics and fans alike.

Over 14's under 16's to be accompanied by an adult

Adrian Edmondson was a teenager when punk arrived. The songs of The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Jam soundtracked his life through the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Cut forward to 2007: after a boozy pre-Christmas lunch in Soho, Ade stumbled along to Denmark Street, home of many alluring musical instrument shops, and whilst inebriated, ‘accidentally’ bought a mandolin. Surprised to see it sitting there in his kitchen the following morning he nevertheless picked it up, and started playing punk songs with a mandolin accompaniment.

Ade got in touch with Troy Donockley and Maartin Allcock (Fairport Convention, Cat Stevens, Jethro Tull)) and they were both immediately up for it. As soon as he explained the idea to Troy: ‘Punk era classics with Celtic folk arrangements.’

They’ve recently recorded an album, ‘Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera!’, which is out now – it was recorded ‘as live’ at Blue Moon studios in Banbury. ‘Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera’ means ‘One, Two, Three, Four’ in an ancient Cumbrian dialect used almost exclusively by shepherds. Had The Ramones been Cumbrian shepherds, it’s what they would have shouted as the intro to every song...

Over 16s welcome, under 14s to be accompanied

Calvin Harris invented disco. No, Calvin Harris reinvented disco. He made his debut album fuelled by chicken breast fillets. His debut album, with the subtle title "I Created Disco", cost 0p to record. He fashions future-disko using an ancient Amiga computer and is, right now, (literally) knocking together a stonking live set using MDF and 204 samples.

Calvin Harris is a cult producer-slash-singer-slash-bedroom-knob-twiddler who can make the banging-est of pop-dance tunes out of bugger-all kit. The last time he spent any money on gear was three years ago, when he bought a voice processor for £200.

Calvin Harris will make you jump around like a silly-billy but, if you let him, he might also make you cry.

Calvin Harris only made some of this stuff up.
