Mesmerising jazz-rock-dub music from accalimed jazz musicians. Their kinetic charisma is ‘exciting, original and challenging’. (BBC)

Featuring composer Shabaka Hutchings on saxophone and clarinet; Oren Marshall (Moondog, Radiohead) on tuba; and Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Babyshambles) and Tom Skinner (Zero 7, Matthew Herbert) both on drums.

Winners of the 2013 MOBO award, Sons of Kemet have been making waves in the UK with their original take on British Jazz, spanning jazz, rock, dub, Caribbean folk and traditional African diasporan history. Sons of Kemet features composer Shabaka Hutchings on saxophone and clarinet; Oren Marshall (Moondog, Radiohead) on tuba; and Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Babyshambles) and Tom Skinner (Zero 7, Matthew Herbert) both on drums.

Sons of Kemet have already had sessions on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz On 3, and at Maida Vale Studios for BBC Radio 2. They recently collaborated with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the London Jazz Festival and have made appearances at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and at Ronnie Scott’s.

The unique instrumentation brings a diverse and colourful feel to the mix. The use of double drum rhythms create amazing interplay, whilst the saxophone, clarinet and tuba bring the compositions to life by four extremely creative musicians. This is shown extensively in their début album Burn released late last year to critical acclaim but they are also a band that must be experienced live.
