We're thrilled to present the 20th Anniversary Tou We're thrilled to present the 20th Anniversary Tour: Martha Wainwright @martha.wainwright + special guests - to celebrate the anniversary of her seminal debut studio album - at @thebookinghall Dover on Friday 29th August.

Twenty years ago, Martha Wainwright stepped out of her family’s illustrious shadow and announced herself to the world with her stunning debut album ‘Martha Wainwright’. Featuring ‘Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole’, a song about her father, ‘Factory’ and ‘When The Day Is Short’, it immediately proved she was a major talent.

“20 years ago my life as an artist took shape when my first record was released,” Martha recalls. “In many ways that record defined me, as well as launched me into a now over 20 year long career that has made me who I am. It was after 10 years of playing in bars, making cassettes and EPs to sell at my shows, singing backup for my brother Rufus, falling in love and out of love, practising, writing, singing until I could barely sing anymore, partying, playing with musicians and listening to great artists, working with my ex-husband in the studio for 2 years, all that created this first record.”

“20 years later, with 6 other albums under my belt, 2 kids and a career that is chugging along, I can safely say my first record paved my way forward. This tour features great musicians, where I’ll play the record in its entirety as well as a few new songs – there’s no 48 year old me without the 28 year old me.”

Martha Wainwright is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician. She has released seven critically-acclaimed studio albums. Wainwright is the daughter of musicians Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III and the younger sister of singer–composer Rufus Wainwright. Her live performances have received critical praise, with The Telegraph writing that her concerts “leave in no doubt that she is a singular star.”

On May 23rd, [PIAS] will release this album on vinyl for the very first time. This classic debut will also be released on CD and digital, with extra tracks and a bonus disc that features 14 rarities and alternate versions.

Rich(ard) Dawson @richarddawsonofficial and extrem Rich(ard) Dawson @richarddawsonofficial and extremely talented composer and song maker Faye Maccalman @fayemaccalman play St George's Church @st.georgeschurchevents #Brighton on Friday 23rd May AND at @creativefstone The Quarterhouse, Folkestone on Saturday 24th May.

Rich(ard) Dawson returns with news of his latest record End of the Middle - this post features the track 'Gondola' from the album, which Richard describes as "an old friend."
By stripping things to a bare bones essence, what is revealed is a remarkably poised, oddly elegant and beautiful collection of songs - unquestionably some of Dawson’s finest work to date.

“I wanted this album to be small-scale and very domestic,” he explains. “To be stripped back, reconnect with the basics and let everything speak for itself – to be really stark and naked by just putting the words and melodies out there.”

Faye MacCalman is a performer, composer-songwriter and improviser on saxophone, clarinet, voice and electronics. She fuses experimental songwriting with free-weaving melodies and enveloping rhythms drawing on jazz, folk and rock music inspired by under the surface emotional worlds; playfully merging magical realism with raw realities.

"Providing food for thought on what jazz is and can become" ~ BBC.

Eliza Carthy (solo) @elizacarthh + Jennifer Reid @ Eliza Carthy (solo) @elizacarthh + Jennifer Reid @jenniferballadss play @creativefstone #Folkestone on Saturday 21st June.

If there is one musician who embodies the dynamism and vitality of the current English folk revival, it’s Eliza Carthy MBE.

As the daughter of folk legends Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, Eliza grew up immersed in the world of traditional music and from an early age was championed by John Peel, Andy Kershaw and Billy Bragg.

Beloved of staunch traditionalists and iconoclasts alike, Eliza’s music effortlessly crosses boundaries of genre and style. Whether solo or fronting a big band, performing a centuries-old ballad or a self-written song, her powerful, nuanced voice, fiercely beautiful fiddle-playing, and mesmerizing performances have influenced a whole generation of young musicians.

Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize, and winner of innumerable other accolades over her thirty-year career, Eliza has performed and recorded around the world with a diverse array of artists including, Paul Weller, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Patrick Wolf, and Jarvis Cocker.

Describing herself simply as a modern English musician, she is one of the most impressive, engaging, and important performers of her generation.

"Unarguably the queen of English Folk" ~ The Observer

Jennifer Reid performs 19th Century Lancashire dialect work songs, Manchester broadside ballads and clog steps. She played Barb in Shane Meadows’ critically acclaimed period drama The Gallows Pole on the BBC. She works across academia, folk performance, heritage consultation and media to bring industrial history back to the people. Think rousing songs and passionate oratory.

'Flags of the Scared Harp (20th Anniversary Edition)'.

Jackie-O Motherfucker “patiently unravel their source material's tangled threads, respooling them into wondrously evocative yet deeply personalised new devotionals.” ~ Pitchfork.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jackie-O Motherfucker’s ‘Flags Of The Sacred Harp’, a re-imagining of traditional hymns and anthems from the original American songbook that was first published in 1844, @fire_records releases a double vinyl edition of this much-heralded work.

Jackie-O Motherfucker @jackie_o_motherfucker + special guests also play The Rosehill @the_rose_hill Brighton on Thursday 28th August.

Jackie-O Motherfucker's music draws from a variety of subgenres including various folk musics of the world (American folk and blues, Traditional English folk ballads, etc.), drone, free jazz, psychedelia, and noise rock, and is heavily improvisational in its nature. Because they are a collective, rather than a consistent band or group, the sound of their music can change from performance to performance.
