With the recent release of their ninth studio album Wilderness, The Handsome Family have been doing what they love since 1993. The husband-wife duo of Brett Sparks (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Rennie Sparks (bass, banjo, vocals) create their own style of alternative country/Americana music which revolves around Rennie’s lyrics and Brett’s music.
Based in Albuquerque, Illinois, the duo also spent time in the Wilco Loft in Chicago to record their latest album which has been described as ‘the Beatles of the folk world’. Wilderness is populated by wild animals, tall tales and folklore from American history, with musical blends of Appalachian holler, psych-rock and Tin Pan Alley stylings.
The Handsome Family are going to celebrate twenty years together by doing a UK tour which excitingly includes Brighton. A book of essays and illustrations by Rennie Sparks was also released with the album. It is a visual and literary homage to their music which in turn expands their unique creative world.
