Round Up: December shows

As 2024 comes to a close, take a look at some of the great sounds December has to offer.

We’re stripping it back this month with a mix of traditional folk with a modern twist. We have The Unthanks with their soaring harmonies; Mikey Kenney, who’s bringing traditional music to the modern day; and a collaborative Christmas show featuring esteemed folk acts, Lady Maisery alongside Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith.

Friday 6th December
The Unthanks in Winter at White Rock Theatre, Hastings
The Unthanks are an English folk four-piece put together by siblings Rachel and Becky Unthank. The pair began as a duo before adding pianist Belinda O’Hooley and viola player Jackie Oates. Their music is a dynamic mix of traditional Northumbrian folk, jazz, and pop, with delicate and emotive vocal melodies alongside weaving instrumentation and harmonies. ‘In Winter’ is the group’s upcoming project that perfectly captures the warmth and nostalgia of the festive season.
7pm, £32.50 (+ booking fee).
*co-pro with White Rock Theatre.

Friday 6th December
Mikey Kenney + Snowy Mountain at The Rose Hill Brighton
Mikey Kenney is a unique and well-respected singer, fiddler, and advocate for classical and traditional dance music. His music has a dynamic variety of modern influences mixed with a recognisable classical sound. Throughout his latest album, ‘English Northwestern Fiddle’ (released November of 2023), you can hear influences of traditional English as well as Scottish folk.
8pm, £18 on the door, £14 (+ booking fee) in advance.

Friday 20th December
Awake Arise: A Christmas Show For Our Times at Folkestone Quarterhouse, Kent
Awake Arise is a Christmas show celebrating the varied traditions of the winter season. Crafted by five of the most celebrated performers in the English folk scene – award-winning trio Lady Maisery playing alongside critically acclaimed duo Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith – the show aims to shed light on the hope and joy music can bring to us all.
