Staff Picks For 2024
As a fantastic year (thank you!) begins to draw to a close, the lovely Melting Vinyl team share their highlights of the year with you – we each chose our favourite Melting Vinyl gig of 2024, and our favourite album of 2024, and sometimes just an anecdote to add a bit of additional festive sparkle.
A huge thank you to you all for loving live music and being part of the Melting Vinyl ‘family’.
We have many more incredible live experiences for you next year, so please keep an eye on our socials, newsletter and website for news and updates.
Anna (MV owner and programming):
Favourite Melting Vinyl Gig of 2024
MEMORIALS at ALPHABET. I find it hard to describe their music – free jazz, electronica, psych folk? and they are bewitching live.
Favourite Album of 2024 Pictish Trail ‘Island Family’ (Fire Records). Unpredictable and enticing, mesmerising live, Johnny (Lost Map) does so much to keep independent scenes alive in the UK.
Story
Krankenhaus Festival – I love going to this enchanting, intimate setting in Cumbia every year with my auntie to discover new bands. Melting Vinyl also tends to promote similar bands so it’s a nice chance to see artists again without working on the gig!
Grant (MV Programming (with Anna)):
Favourite Melting Vinyl Gig of 2024
AK/DK at ALPHABET, Brighton.
Favourite Album of 2024
AK/DK – Strange Loops.
So a clean sweep for the Brighton boys!
Story
It was 2nd time at Iceland Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik year, and I managed to see 36 acts in a week and still had time to sit in a hot tub and visit the punk Museum. Result.
Leashia (MV Ticketing/Production):
Favourite Melting Vinyl Gig of 2024
This was a difficult decision, there were so many, but… Devendra Banhart at St George’s Church. Uplifting songs, charismatic performance with charming audience interaction. Wonderful.
Favourite Album of 2024
Silent Stories by pianist and composer Sofi Piez. Just beautiful. I saw her performing in a church at Iceland Airwaves Festival; absolutely mesmerising.
Chris (MV Visuals and Equipment Loan):
Favourite Melting Vinyl Gig of 2024
AK/DK (at ALPHABET) just go from strength to strength with their infectious motorik double-drum synth assault. Impossible to keep still when watching them!
Favourite Album of 2024
Three Quarter Skies’ ‘Fade In’. Simon Scott from Slowdive’s new project Three Quarter Skies takes FSA’s pastoral shoegaze blueprint and adds motorik rhythms. The results are dreamlike and occasionally unsettling. It was a pleasure to work with Simon for the videos and live shows.
Alison (MV Marketing):
Favourite Melting Vinyl Gig of 2024
Anna Erhard + Robert Kretzschmar at The Rossi Bar.
A tongue-in-cheek and fun night.
Favourite Album of 2024
Goat by Goat. Just funky enough. Just weird enough. Just lo-fi enough. Just right.
Story
I REALLY enjoy updating websites, including this one.
Tom (MV Artist Liaison):
Favourite Melting Vinyl Gig of 2024
Sorry, I need to choose two – Lankum (Chalk) and Black Doldrums (Rossi Bar).
Favourite Album of 2024
Tristwch y Fenywod – Tristwch y Fenywod (although ask me ten minutes from now and it’ll be different!)
Matthew (MV Design):
Favourite Melting Vinyl Gig of 2024
Jali Bakary at The Rose Hill – legendary.
Favourite Album of 2024
Mine’s a mix rather than an album – Optimo Monthly Mix on NTS (June).
Enjoy a lovely festive season, and we’ll see you all on the other side. Our creative nights out in your favourite venues continue throughout 2025.
Our first show of 2025 is Ryley Walker (US) solo performance + special guests at Lewes Con Club on Thursday 30th January. Please note that the Lewes Psychedelic Festival 2025 is now sold out.
