Get ready for a special Japanese-themed edition of one of Brighton’s favourite institutions, The Catalyst Club! Hosted by Cheeky Guides creator, Dr. Bramwell, the Catalyst Club is a night dedicated to the singular passions of everyday folk and has been a Brighton institution for over 7 years, playing host to 100s of interactive and entertaining talks. Each night three speakers take to the stage to share their knowledge and passion, followed by an informal Q&A. As one satisfied punter put it: ‘the Catalyst is TED for everyone.’ Expect to be thrilled, fascinated and surprised from start to finish.
The Wonderful Worlds of Miyazaki: Tim Pilcher
A celebration of the life and work of Manga artists and director, Hayao Miyazaki and Japan’s most successful animation company, Studio Ghibli. This talk explores the themes, characters and stories in their films, and why they are important to your spiritual wellbeing.
Living in the Mega City: Cara Courage and Jim Stephenson
A talk about the relationship between people and the urban space they inhabit, looking at the psychological experience of city living and how Japanese cities work as a living organism with its residents.
Tokyo Performance Art: Jonathan Swain
Between 1957-1970 a unique group of young Japanese artists progressed from everyday materials to using themselves as the medium. Not anti-art, more an expansion of art, an extension of life. Jonathan Swain reveals all.
