Friday stage
Headliner:
Wolf People
The sole UK representatives on the Jagjaguwar roster, Wolf People have a majestic haunting sound, aural archaeologists evoking feeling of being on the Downs at night or on the side of a vast endless lake.
Having just witnessed them play to a rapturous crowd at Liverpool Psych Fest, we welcome them to our line up, adding their folk-tinged heavy psych to proceedings.

Consider Wolf People as aural archaeologists then, or human sound mirrors receiving signals from the ghosts that rest in the fertile soil of Albion. Their sonic visions are Arcadian, their music joining the dots between reverie-inducing rural landscapes and the hard-riffing rock birthed in England’s industrial towns. They marry north and south, country and city, the archaic and the modern. They are Fairport Unconventional. The 13th Floor Escalators. They are Blake Sabbath. “Not having a shared local pub or common place of residence means we draw on all sorts of physical influences,” says Hollick, “We’re not channeling urban oppression, yet have always been intent on having an English sound. When I first met Jack I was struck by someone who was writing songs that described my own childhood, even though they grew up at the other end of the country.”

Vanishing Twin
Pleased to welcome Vanishing Twin, after playing a glorious set at our sister Folkestone psychedelic festival earlier in 2017.
Drawing on sounds outside of the usual pop vocabulary, the London-based group use forgotten drum machines, home-made electronics, vibraphones, tablas, and harp to invoke the esoteric psychedelia of lost soundtracks, radiophonic experiments and minimal music orchestras.

Adrena Adrena
Adrena Adrena are a collaboration between visual artist Daisy Dickinson and drummer E-Da Kazuhisa, previously the drummer of the Japanese noise band Boredoms and currently British electronic/post-rock band Seefeel (Rephlex, Warp Records). We’re always looking to add an extra dimension to the line up and this unique duo complete our creative circle.

The duo cut a raw blend of drums, noise and organic visual work, featuring in their performances an eight foot white sphere that hangs above Kazuhisa’s drum kit and which Dickinson maps videos on to; her work was described by William Barns-Graham of Fluid Radio as ‘cosmological and transcendental, drawing attention to the wonder of the earth and our sensuality on it’.

Wax Machine
Brighton based 7 – piece Wax Machine, (we like them as they are a colourful world equally female and male act) continue to seek out new terrain in the world of Psych. The band blend Eastern modes, carnival rides and 60s west coast grooves, mapping out an expansive musical landscape. Taking inspiration from Moondog, early Pink Floyd and Dr. John, the songs are constantly evolving with fluid female/male vocals and instrumental arrangements weaving mystic tales over poly-rhythmic patterns.

‘Wax Machine’s debut EP will leave you with kaleidoscopic ear drums’ (Gigslutz)

Vinyl Staircase
Vinyl Staircase are a young 4 piece Psychedelic-Pop band from Dorking who sound like they’ve been playing beyond their years. Poetic mesmerising songs that capture hints of Shoegaze, a sprinkle of Fuzz and a drizzle of Math Rock thrown in-between.
Having done visuals for them at the Portsmouth Psych Fest, innerstrings was struck by the effortless cool they have about them whilst still managing to fully engage with the audience with their song dynamics alone.
Hotly tipped by Wolf Alice and already bagged support slots for the likes of Blossoms, Cabbage and Palm Honey, we are really freaking happy to have them on board!

Saturday stage
Headliner:
Josefin Öhrn + the Liberation

Josefin has an aura – a Klimt or a Pre-Raphaelite painting of a woman coming to life – but with confidence and an amazing expansive beautiful sound that covers you in a psych mist that only bands from Sweden can produce.

One of the ever-reliable acts on the Rocket Recordings label, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation recently completed a sold-out tour of the UK, with our very own visual artist, innerstrings supplying their visuals. Of the tour, innerstrings says;

“Being asked to tour with Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation was a great experience. They had the audience in the palm of their hands, each dynamic performance was rapturously received. Not a band to stick to the same tempo throughout the performance, and with Josefin’s stage presence, expect an engaging performance. I’m very excited to have them play at the festival.”

Soccer96
At Lewes Psych Fest, we always like to have at least one act who can maintain high levels of psych, but without the aid of guitars, Soccer 96 are an obvious choice. I’ve (innerstrings) had the pleasure of doing visuals for Soccer 96 on a number of occasions now. Their mix of interstellar synth jams, funk and psych is irresistible, I challenge anyone to keep still during their performance.

Julien Gasc
Julien Gasc band, on the Born Bad label, is a blissed out mirage of pop-psych all wrapped up in Julian’s breezy French words.
They are no stranger to the Psych fest, Julien having played in Aquaserge (and Sterolab’s Laetitia Sadier) for one of our regular one-off nights in Brighton. We welcome him and his band – once described as ‘elegant, smiling’ – back.

Melt Dunes
One of the hardest working bands on the psych circuit, Melt Dunes appropriately operate some kind of scorched earth policy. Equally blissed and out punishing live which is why we had to have them play.
Forming in 2015, Portsmouth’s Melt Dunes intertwine heavy-psychedelia, kraut and garage-rock in the vein of The Black Angels, Can and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd.
Rapidly developing a fierce reputation for their frenetic live shows, Melt Dunes will soon throw us all into the darkest netherworld of their psychedelic realm.

“This band could very well be UK psych’s saving grace and are unquestionably going to turn the heads of fuzz-fiends across the globe.” (Gig Wise)

La Houle
What a find, this band is straddling the world of psych and indie together, they create a huge sound mixed with cosmic pads, shoegaze psych guitars, synthetic rhythms while defending poetic lyrics as cold as convoluted in Baudelaire’s language. The band released their first EP, in partnership with the anti-label, underground french music digger, La Souterraine (home also to AQUASERGE). La Houle is the musical project of Geoffrey Papin and Simon Sockeel Joined in live by Clementine Blue (Tiger Lion) and John Davies (Traams / Theo Verney). La Houle is searching from the trough to the top of the wave, which one between ardour or tenderness will defeat.

Artists in the afternoon in the small psych room
Dog In The Snow
Helen Ganya Brown’s performance is captivating live with urgent, profound other-worldly worlds. If you love the mystery of Nick Cave you’ll love this artist’s off-kilter, existential-driven songwriting.

Timeron
Crooked, curious machine music from the home of such stuff courtesy of James Tranmer, who’s best known as member of Upset! The Rhythm’s Pheromoans and The Sticks.
‘Working outside of lo-fi, avant-pop parameters he proves a dab hand at creating nervy machine rhythms matched by fluent, almost jazz-wise synth and box strokes to come off like some long-lost mutant from Detroit or Chicago circa ’89’ – Boomkat
Timeron has made appearances on recent compilations from Anti-Ghost Moon Ray & Newcastle label Acid Waxa, with a debut 12″ imminent. He will be supporting Wolfgang Voigt (GAS) at the Attenborough Centre For The Creative Arts on the 9th October.

Artists in-stores at the Union Music Store
This is the Kit
The much loved 6 music indie-folk project of Kate Stables, she creates warm, melodious song gems! Previously hand-picked to support the likes of The National, Sharon Van Etten, Iron & Wine and Jose Gonzales, 2017 saw This is the Kit signed to Rough Trade with the release of the critically acclaimed Moonshine Freeze.

Oliver Cherer
Constantly exploring, Oliver Cherer has made electronic, ambient, psycho-geographic and dark folky albums on a long list of labels and gathered glowing reviews from around the world. This year has seen three highly regarded LPs alone, including The Green Line by Gilroy Mere (a pseudonym) and The Myth of Violet Meek under his own name. Both these LPs have received amazing press already and huge support from 6 Music.
