Melting Vinyl and Innerstrings are proud to announce Lewes Psychedelic Festival 2025.
The festival returns on 17/18th January 2025 with visuals and music for the senses.
Join us in the ancient setting of Lewes, where we’re bringing together a wide variety of acts under the psych umbrella. As ever, international visual artist Innerstrings will be bringing the visuals, turning both rooms into a bath of swirling liquid light, not unlike being in a giant lava lamp.
Since 2009, Lewes Psych Fest is known for its mind-expansive lineups with a range of psych wonders from Brighton and beyond. This year will be no different, with even more rule-breakers and genre-defyers than ever before. Expect to hear a mix of psych-folk dreamy production on Friday night with local luminaries and Lush/Aircooled band members. On Saturday the dial changes to psych 70’s dynamic guitar, hauntological fuzz-rock mesmerising harmonies and psych infused driving electronic rhythms from Scotland through to Wales and back to the south-east of England from members of Wolf People and Gruff Rhys band etc. This is merely a glance at some of the diverse and distinctive artists performing at this year’s event.
Historically this unique event has always sold out well in advance; so we advise the early purchase of tickets to avoid disappointment.
Friday 17th January:
Miki Berenyi Trio (On Bella Union) are Miki Berenyi on vocals/guitar (Lush), Kevin ‘Moose’ McKillop on guitar (Moose) and Oliver Cherer (Gilroy Mere, Aircooled). The three musicians first worked together during Piroshka’s 2021 tour. Since then the band has developed a haunting, urgent, ethereal momentum of its own, touring with the Wedding Present and Gang of Four and sold out London co-headline shows with Aircooled.
Gwenifer Raymond Gwenifer began playing guitar at the age of eight shortly after having been first exposed to punk and grunge. In 2017 she signed to the multi-Grammy award nominated label Tompkins Square. She released her first single ‘Sometimes There’s Blood’ in October of that year and released her debut album ‘You Never Were Much of a Dancer’ in June of 2018 to worldwide acclaim. What followed was much international touring and ‘Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain’ was released in November of 2020, moving from a more traditional folk style into somewhat more avant-garde and complex compositions.
Sairie are a three-piece folk band from East Sussex. Their music is sparse and delicate, and often inspired by their shared love of folklore, nature and dark tales. The band was formed in 2018, and to date they have released two 7” singles on the Fenny Compton and Gardner’s Delight labels, two self-released EPs, and their latest project ‘The Cinder Sheet’: a collection of their favourite songs from films. They are now working on their debut album.
“…acoustically expansive, drone-deepened, acid-folk nuggets” – Stewart Lee, Idler Magazine
“Anticipation grows for where Sairie can take their open-eared psych-folk vision next.” Folk Radio UK
Saturday 18th January:
Helicon Helicon was formed by brothers John-Paul and Gary Hughes in East Kilbride, Glasgow (hometown of fellow band brothers and Fuzz Club label mates The Jesus & Mary Chain).
Over the last few years, the band has enjoyed repeated spot plays of all new releases on BBC Radio, 6 Music and has been officially playlisted by Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer in the UK and USA. with Tony Doogan (Mogwai), Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spiritualized, Dead Skeletons), Mark Gardener (RIDE) and LA-based DJ/Producer AL LOVER.
In January 2025, Helicon will record their 4th studio album for Fuzz Club – a collaborative work with AL LOVER. Exploring new sonic territory;blending AL’s electronica, trip hop, ambient and breakbeat grooves with Helicon’s sitar/guitar-driven psychedelia. Recording the album on the
Isle of Lewis, Scotland, and subsequent live shows will form the basis of a short documentary film ‘HELICON – THE OUTER LANDS’ for release in 2025. In 2023 their ‘God Intentions’ album won ‘PsychLovers’ Album of The Year’, made the long list for Scottish Album of The Year and earned the band a headline slot at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards.
‘Absolutely mesmerising, eastern- influenced, Scottish psychedelia’. Louder than War
Floral Image
Melodious, sultry, luminescent psychedelia sewn in the soils of Norwich, UK. The band’s early demos were championed on BBC Introducing by both Huw Stephens and Jamz Supernova, featuring on the 2020 ‘Ones To Watch Show’. They proceeded a sellout headline tour across the UK and Europe in May, the band released their debut EP ‘So Synthesised’ in April 2023, supported by Under The Radar, Clash, EARMILK and DORK, as well as seeing radio play from BBC 6 Music’s Amy Lamé and Tom Robinson, John Kennedy on Radio X and Shell Zenner on Amazing Radio.
Large Plants Large Plants is the hauntological fuzz-rock project of Jack Sharp, former singer guitarist from psych-folk luminaries Wolf People. In 2022 the band dropped an acid-rock cover of Madonna’s ‘La Isla Bonita’ on the Ghost Box label, followed swiftly by their debut LP ‘The Carrier’, described by Shindig as “A succinct distillation of folk-rock magnificence”. Now a formidable live act, having toured with Mudhoney and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Large Plants are currently working on their third album.
Bitw
Sci-fi mountain music. Cate Le Bon hit the nail on the head when unveiling his glorious pop offering Bitw to the world. Whilst Bitw’s debut stems from a blissful reminiscing rather than a wallowing in nostalgia and yearning to recapture the past, Rehearse forced the clouds to part and reveal itself to be his most personal offering to date. Gruff also plays in Gruff Rhys band.
