Modern Studies

In celebration of their fourth LP release ‘We Are There’ earlier this 2022 via Fire Records, Modern Studies will be joining MV for this exciting headline show.

Scottish quartet Modern Studies unite pastoral chamber pop and folk with a subtly experimental spirit. Blending lush vocal harmonies, kosmische-tinged rhythms and intricate arrangements, the band have released three critically-acclaimed LPs since 2016.

Modern Studies formed in 2015 around the songwriting of Glasgow-based musician Emily Scott. Having recently written a set of songs on an antique pedal harmonium, which she was about to donate to her friend Pete Harvey’s studio, Scott’s material soon became the centre of a new collaboration with Harvey, Joe Smillie, and Rob St. John. The group of multi-instrumentalists assembled at Harvey’s Pumpkinfield studio in rural Perthshire and adorned Scott’s thoughtful tunes with cello, analogue synths, guitars, double bass, tape loops, drums, and a variety of other tones, emerging with their full-length debut, ‘Swell to Great’.

Modern Studies is an exciting current example of a quartet who operates within the sphere of alternative music, borrowing nuances of folk, indie-pop, dream pop, and psychedelia. This quartet aren’t afraid to wear multiple influences on their sleeves creating a sound which is deep and sophisticated in musicianship.

“There’s a charm within Modern Studies’ DNA which makes them, without fanfare or clamour, one of today’s most mesmerising outfits.” – Prog (The Weight of the Sun)

“Sit up and take note; Modern Studies are setting the standards for intelligent pop in 2018.” – Record Collector (Welcome Strangers)

“a gorgeous sound which lands somewhere between Belle & Sebastian at their most icily wistful, and Fairport Convention’s autumnal folk-rock.” – The List (Swell to Great)

Brighton 3-piece Patients, described as “Smart Spiders from Mars”, will play a rare and virtually unplugged acoustic set at this intimate gig.
