SUN KIL MOON

Ex-Red House Painter’s Ohio singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek returns with his luminous acoustic balladry and harrowingly intimate lyricism with new album Universal Themes.

Sun Kil Moon was formed in 2002 by Mark Kozelek after the end of 4AD’s rock band Red House Painters, and released the debut album Ghosts of the Great Highway in 2003 to critical acclaim. It was an album which represented an expansive, continent-traversing narrative that evoked the literary style of John Steinbeck and the vivid imagery of everyday American life captured in the watercolors of Edward Hopper. Kozelek proved his talents as an amazing songwriter from the offset and each album has seen him grow in critical and commercial acclaim.

His 2014 album Benji saw him collaborate with the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy and Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley, and was recognised as one of the Top 100 Best Albums of the Decade so far by Pitchfork. Again, it was a beautifully made piece; full of sparse musical arrangements and haunting production which heightened the album’s intimacy and ultimately rendered it a masterpiece of reflection and introspection, destined to be played on repeat in scores of late-night, tired, and lonely rooms.

“A truly extraordinary gig” – The Guardian *****

Sad but sweet, it’s the perfect conclusion to one of the truest, wisest albums you’ll ever hear. – The Independent
